Frequently Asked Questions
Course Textbooks
How do I find the books for my course?
Go to the Textbook page to search for your course books (click on Textbooks to the left). The bookstore website allows you to either build a printable list of your course books or shop on-line for them. You can enter multiple courses in your search. Make sure you enter the correct section as courses with many sections may have different book lists.
When can I start buying my textbooks?
As soon as they are listed on our website. Most books are available weeks before the term begins. You can buy books on-line or in store.
Should I wait until my first class to obtain the list of books?
There rarely are changes to the list once it is produced. If a course director does make a change, we extend the period for returns. (Remember to keep your receipt and keep your books in perfect condition for resale.) We encourage you to beat the rush!
When are books available for course work?
Books are brought in weeks or even months before the term begins – and we start displaying books when the majority of the course book adoptions are known.
Placing your order
How do I order books on-line?
You can order books and other items through this web site, which will lead you from the section (Textbooks, General books, Clothing, Stationery, U50 memorabilia and gift items, etc.) to the checkout. We accept major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex) for on-line purchases.
What happens if I want to cancel my order?
We try to ship within 1 business day, so it may be too late! If you spot an error after checking out, please email us immediately (or call!). Click on our contact page at the top right of this page.
Payment and billing
Can I use a credit card in someone else’s name?
Yes, but we need you to complete, and have signed by the cardholder, our credit card authorization consent form prior to purchase. Click here to obtain and print a copy of the form. The form can also be obtained from our cash supervisor at the Bookstore. You must present the signed form, in person, with the other person's credit card, when you are using the other person's credit card for purchase. The original copy of the form must be presented at the time of purchase, we cannot accept faxes or photocopied versions of the consent form. The signature on the credit card must be that of the authorized credit card holder, and it must match the signature presented on the consent form. You must also present your York University Student YU ID card or a valid government approved photo ID, at the time of purchase.
How do I know what shipping costs are added to my transaction?
Shipping charges are calculated automatically and are shown on your total at the time of checkout. Click on “Shipping & Delivery” to see our shipping rates.
Will I be charged for unshipped items on backorder?
No. Only those items shipped will be charged.
b>Shipping and Delivery
What happens if you are out of stock of something?
Occasionally we run out of stock of items. We do check and reorder items on a regular basis. We regret we cannot backorder, so you must reorder items that are not shipped.
Can I return items purchased on-line?
Most items are returnable, but please refer to our detailed return policy on
the lower left of this page. Sorry, you are responsible for return shipping and to make sure it arrives at the correct address which you can find on our home page. You can return books personally to either store location (See our store hours).
When will you ship my order?
We usually ship within 1 business day from when you placed the order.
What are your shipping charges?
Click on Shipping and Delivery on the lower left to review our shipping options and charges
How can I track my order?
You will receive a tracking number by email once your order is with the courier and then you can track the delivery. If you have a problem tracking, email the Bookstore directly at bookstor@yorku.ca
What happens if my order never arrives?
Please allow 5-6 days for delivery then try tracking the order with the courier. Next contact the Bookstore. If your order is missing it will be replaced.
I live in an apartment building and am not home to receive couriers, what will happen to my order?
Our courier will leave a note for you to pick up at their nearest depot. We do not recommend Canada Post as parcels can be lost and they are not traceable or insured.
Selling Used Books
Can I sell my books back to you?
Absolutely! We buy books year ‘round, but the best time to sell is just before each term (July/August, December and April). If the book is being re-adopted for a new term, we can pay the highest price. Otherwise, we use our internet based network to try to find another college in Canada that is looking for the book. Lastly, we go to US based wholesalers to offer their price to you.
Are there any other options?
Yes. Go to our website, Used books, and you will link to “sellmytextbooks.ca” and you can arrange to post your books for sale directly to other students. This is a free service.
Shopping in person
What are your hours?
Our hours are listed under “Store Hours” on our website homepage. We have extended hours at the beginning of each new term.
How do I find things in the Bookstore?
We suggest you look through this website to see the array of campus items, essential stationery, general books as well as course materials. Download the textbook ‘map’ to get the location of course books, and to help you navigate through the text section referring to our shelf tags.
When should I shop for my textbooks?
At the beginning of each term, we do get busy; add extra staff to keep wait times to a minimum. But it is a good idea to shop early, or to shop during off hours- first thing in the morning, late afternoons, avoid middle of the day or just before evening classes start.
About York Bookstore
Who owns the Bookstore?
We are owned and operated by York University. We are Non- profit. If we make any money at the end of the year, the proceeds are returned to the University for student and academic programs.
Where do you get the York clothing?
We source locally where possible. All clothing is produced by companies that are members of the Fair Labour Association. Our reputable manufacturers pay a royalty to the university for the use of the York name or logos. We custom make items for various events, and for student groups, faculties and colleges. Check out: www.fairlabor.org and http://www.yorku.ca/secretariat/licensing/index.htm
Why are some items not available?
Sometimes we do underestimate and need to replace stock. Sometimes we are waiting for publishers to ship items that are being printed. Our staff will give you updates if you are waiting for an item.
