York University Bookstore offers an online rental program, as well as a growing in-store rental program. For details on the in-store rentals scroll half way down this page.

Online Rentals, How it works – Rent, Receive, and Return:


  • Click on the link below.
  • Select the book you want to rent.
  • Important: Check that it’s the right edition for your course - the ISBN is best.
  • Go through the checkout steps.
  • The book is shipped and arrives in 5 – 10 business days depending on your location.
  • On or before the due date return the book to the Bookstore returns desk.
  • The Bookstore will scan the book and log its return. You will get a confirmation email.

Step by Step Instructions

Renting:


1) Sign In & Register:
  • Click on the link – then click on “sign in” at the top right.
  • Note: Both first time and returning rental customers visitors need to register.
  • To register click on “New Customer” at the top and fill out the form. This will allow you to search for books and then rent.
  • You can search without signing in, but can’t complete a rental.
2) Searching:
  • In the search field put in the book title, or author, or ISBN – the ISBN is the most accurate search. Then click on “Find Books.”
  • From the listing of books choose the one you want and click on the word "Rent" under the price.
  • You will get all the book details, and if it is available.
  • Important: Double check to ensure you have the right edition for your course before renting - the book's ISBN is the best way to confirm.
3) Selecting the Rental:
  • Click on the drop down menu and select the rental period you want.
  • You will get 5 rental terms ranging from 30 – 125 days. The price for each rental period will be shown as well as the return date.
  • click on “Add to Cart.”
  • You can search and add other books for rent if you wish.
  • Review and check off the rental agreement terms, then click "Update Cart" followed by "Go to Checkout."
4) Checkout:
Have your credit card ready – Visa, MasterCard or American Express accepted.
  • Click on “books in bag” at the top right then click on “Go to Checkout.”
  • Fill in the address for deliver and other contact details – returning renters will have this set already but please ensure it is right.
    At the bottom of the page select your shipping method, then click on "Go to Checkout."
  • Fill in your credit card information, then click on "Go to Checkout".
  • Review your order details. You can back out to make changes if necessary.
  • Click on “Place Your Order” at the bottom to finalize the order.
  • You will receive a confirmation order number and a receipt that you can print. This information will also be stored under your account.

Receiving:
  • Note: Your books are coming from the USA. York University Bookstore uses a major US textbook distributor to source the books.
  • Your books will ship via Federal Express and should arrive in 4 – 8 business days depending on your location in Canada.
  • If you have any issues with your order – shipping, returns, book condition, credit card charges contact the distributor's customer service directly at 1-888-398 –1977. You can also log on to your rental account and email your queries.
 
 
Returns:

1) Refunds:
  • You have 21 days from placing your order to return the books for refund, for any reason.
  • The book must be returned to the York University Bookstore – either the Keele or Glendon campuses.
  • No refunds are allowed after 21 days.
2) Rental Extensions:
  • You have the ability to extend your rental period at an extra charge if you need to use the books longer.
  • Sign in to your account on the rental website and click on “Extensions and Buyouts” on the left.
  • There are five extension periods ranging from 10 - 60 days.
3) Rental Returns:
  • On or before the return date bring the book back to the York University Bookstore – either the Keele or Glendon campuses.
  • You can log into your account you can prepare a “Rapid Return Slip” prior to bringing the book back to the York Bookstore.
  • At the Bookstore our staff will scan the Rapid Return Slip and process the return.
  • An email confirmation will be generated and sent to you.
  • You can also just show up at the Bookstore with your books on or prior to the returns date.
  • The Bookstore staff will need to find your account information – they can search under name, email or order number – before confirming the return.
 
 
In-Store Textbook Rental Program

The Bookstore is expanding its in-store rental program for the 2013 Summer Term. There are still thousands of titles available for rent through the on-line rental program where we ship rental books to you from a central warehouse.

How to Rent:
  • Check the list of titles to see if any matches your course (see below - Keele and Glendon campuses).
  • Take the applicable book to a cash register in the Bookstore.
  • Have your required documentation and credit card available (see below).
  • Fill our and sign the rental contract, and make your payment.

Requirements for the Rental:

  • You must be 18 years of age, be a York University student with a valid YorkU Card and a yorku email.
  • Your parents can act as the renter if you are under 18 years old.
  • At the time of rental you will need your YorkU Card and a second piece of photo ID to prove your age.
  • You also need a valid credit card to guarantee the rental – you can pay for the rental with any payment method but must provide the credit card as well.

Rental Period and Returns:
  • The Summer 2013 rental period runs from May 1, 2013 - August 15, 2013.
  • The rental return deadline is Friday August 23, 2013.
  • After signing your rental agreement you have 14 days to return the book (if still in perfect condition) for refund.

The in-store rental program is expanding each semester to increase your options and to be able to rent books conveniently. Currently, only new books may be rented from the in-store rental program.
 
 
 
 
YORK University Book Rental Agreement - For the In-Store Rental Program

This rental agreement ("Agreement") is a contract between you and the York University Bookstore, and applies to your rental of textbooks and/or course related materials (the "Rented Materials") from us. This Agreement sets forth your rights and obligations and should be read carefully. In this Agreement, "you" or "your" means any person or entity renting Rented Materials from the York University Bookstore using this rental service (the "Service"). Unless otherwise stated, "York University Bookstore", the "Bookstore” "we", "our" or "us" will refer collectively to York University Bookstore.

By signing the agreement printed on the cash register tape at the time of rental, you agree to our terms of use, to all of the terms and conditions enumerated in this agreement, and that your signature is legally binding between you and the York University Bookstore.

The Bookstore may modify this Agreement from time to time and such modification shall be effective upon posting by the Bookstore on its website www.bookstore.yorku.ca.

Terms and Conditions

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to use the Service, have a valid credit card, a valid York University student card, and a valid yorku.ca email address.
  • You are entering into this agreement with the York University Bookstore. All Rented Materials must be returned to the bookstore location (Keele or Glendon campuses) from which they were originally rented as per terms of this Agreement.
  • When you rent Rented Materials your credit card will be charged when your order is fulfilled. In addition, in order to rent Rented Materials, you must have a valid credit card on file with us at all times. If your credit card is due to expire during the rental term it is your responsibility to contact the bookstore and provide the new expiry date.
  • In the event your parent is completing the purchase for you with their credit card information, by completing this rental agreement, you are both entering into the contract. The parent must be present and sign the agreement along with the student in order to rent books under this program.
  • Rented Materials are the property of the York University and remain so during the rental period. The rental book must be returned in York University Bookstore Standard Condition.
  • Rented Materials must be returned to the campus bookstore from which they were originally rented by the rental return date designated by us at the time of rental (the "Rental Return Date") in York University Standard Condition. Rental Returns will only be accepted in person. Returns by mail will not be accepted. York University Bookstore Standard Condition will be determined by us at our sole discretion, but generally means book spine intact, no excessive damage to cover or contents, all original pages intact, all original components present, and no excessive highlighting, writing or other markings. Normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted.
  • York University Bookstore is not responsible for reminding you of your Rental Return Date. Any and all notifications are a courtesy. You are responsible for complying with the Rental Return Dates. You agree and acknowledge that a Rental book returned even 1 day after the Rental Return Date is considered to be non-returned and Non-Return Fees will apply.
 
 
  • Rented Materials not returned by the Rental Return Date, or Rented Materials returned on or before the Rental Return Date not in York University Bookstore Standard condition will be subject to Non-Return Fees. Non-Return Fees will be automatically charged to the credit card on file for this Agreement as follows for each item of Rented Material: 50% of the new book price, plus a processing fee of $10.00 for each book. The new book price is based on the new book retail price at time of rental. In the event that the credit card on file for this Agreement is no longer valid or in the event the purchasing limit on such credit card has been exceeded at the time the Non-Return Fees are to be charged, we will bill you for, and you agree to promptly pay in full, the Non-Return Fees. In the event that you do not promptly pay the Non-Return Fees in full, we reserve the right to place a financial hold on your University Account which may prevent you from registering in classes, obtaining transcripts, your diploma, or have other consequences until you pay the outstanding amount. We also reserve the right to transfer at our discretion any unpaid fees to a 3rd party collection agency, and you agree that we are permitted to share with them any personal information necessary to assist them in obtaining payment from you.
  • Non-Return Fees are in addition to the Rental Fee collected at the beginning of the term.
  • You are responsible for loss or theft of all Rented Materials.
  • In the event that you change your mind about this agreement and wish to return the book , a limited time refund grace period is permitted. The rental fee refund policy is identical to our textbook purchase return policy:

    1) Refunds are at the sole discretion of the Bookstore.
    2) Textbooks must be in the same condition as when they were purchased. New books must be in mint condition - no bent corners or creases, spine unbroken with no markings at all.
    3) No refunds will be permitted for shrink wrapped items that have been opened.
    4) Original cash receipt must be presented (no exceptions) The refund ‘grace period’ is no later than 14 calendar days from the original purchase.
    5) There will be no refund grace period for rentals that are inititated after July 1, 2013.
    6) You agree to allow us to use email to communicate with you for the purpose of administering this agreement.
    7) All refunds will be transacted using the original method of payment.

  • You may not assign or transfer this agreement. We reserve the right to assign this agreement at our discretion.
  • This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and constitutes the entire agreement between the parties thereto relating to the subject matter hereof and no waiver or modification hereof shall be effective.
  • If for any reason any provision of this Agreement is determined to be invalid or unenforceable by any court of competent jurisdiction, the remainder of this Agreement shall not be affected thereby and all remaining previsions shall be valid and enforced to the fullest extent permitted by law.
  • Customer hereby acknowledges that there are no representation and warranties, oral or written, express or implied, legal, statutory, customary, collateral or otherwise given or made by the Bookstore or any if our employees with respect to this agreement.
  • This contract supersedes all other written and verbal Agreements.
  • Books that you rent must be returned to the campus store no later than Friday August 23, 2013.
  • Books not returned by the specified Rental Return date will be considered late and subject to fees outlined above.
